Masenko (魔閃光 Masenkō, lit. "Demon's Flash of Light") is an Energy Wave used by Piccolo and Gohan.

Overview

The attack is performed by the user placing both hands above the head with the palms facing the target and one hand in front of the other with the fingers going in opposite directions. When the user thrusts their hands forward, they call the name and fire a beam of yellow, white, or orange energy.

Usage

In the anime, Piccolo uses this attack for the first time as a child when he blasts away Tai's dog who was pursuing him, thereby discovering some of his power.[10]

Gohan uses this attack for the first time in response to Nappa killing Piccolo, to no avail.[11] He then uses it many times throughout the Vegeta, Namek, Captain Ginyu, and Frieza Sagas.

In the anime, Gohan uses the technique to get out of a lake of acid before it dissolves him on Fake Namek.[12]

Piccolo uses the technique against Frieza, to no effect.

In the Garlic Jr. Saga, Gohan uses Masenko beams to dispatch the Spice Boys.

Piccolo also uses it against Cell when helping Gohan's Father-Son Kamehameha, shouting "Masenko HA" while firing it.[13]

In Dragon Ball Super, Super Saiyan Future Trunks uses the Masenko against Goku Black to blind him in order to escape using time machine. Later he uses it once again in Super Saiyan Rage form to force both Goku Black and Future Zamasu on the defensive. Gohan also uses it once during Tournament of Power against Saonel and Pilina.

Gohan's daughter Pan uses the Masenko in Dragon Ball GT. While possessed by Baby, Gohan uses a Masenko, colored pink due to Baby, against Vegeta.[14]

During the Dark King Mechikabura Saga, Super Saiyan 4 Xeno Gohan uses a supercharged version of the Masenko to attack Dark Gogeta, allowing Super Saiyan 4 Xeno Gogeta to follow up with an Atomic Kamehameha.

Film Appearances

In Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, Gohan uses a Masenko against Lakasei's Gemini Shot in a Energy Clash.

In Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, Gohan uses a Masenko to knock down several of Lord Slug's soldiers.

In Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13!, Gohan fires a Masenko at Android 13's back while fighting Super Saiyan Goku.

In Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan Gohan and Super Saiyan Future Trunks used Combined Masenko against Legendary Super Saiyan Broly to no effect.

In the Budokai Tenkaichi series, it is Kid Gohan, Teen Gohan (Base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2), Gohan (Base, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2), Ultimate Gohan, Future Gohan, Future Trunks, and Gohan (Super Hero)'s Blast 2.

In Supersonic Warriors 2, it is called Demon Flash in the game's Super Attack screen.

In Ultimate Butōden, Kid Gohan has it as his ultimate attack. When used, the cutscene features Piccolo's dead body, recreating the first time Gohan used the Masenko.

In Online, Warrior-type Namekians can learn this skill at level 10, and the Charged Masenko variation at level 18.

In Xenoverse, it is a Super Skill used by Kid Gohan, Teen Gohan, and Adult Gohan. The Future Warrior can obtain this skill as a reward in Parallel Quest 09: "Saiyan Pride". In the game, pressing the control stick away from the opponent at the same time the move is performed will cause the user to perform a back jump before firing it allowing them to gain some distance from the opponent before attacking.

In Xenoverse 2, it is a Super Skill used by Gohan (Kid, Teen, & Adult). The Future Warrior can learn this skill by completing School Quest: Lesson 2 of Kid Gohan's Training. If the Control Stick is held opposite the direction the character is facing, the blast will be fired while jumping backwards. As part of the 1.17.00 Update DLC, it can be added to Majin Buu (Gohan Absorbed)'s custom skillset after purchasing it in Partner Customization.

In World Mission, the Masenko is a Super Attack used by Gohan (Kid) who can also use a variation called Neo Masenko. Gohan (Future) can use Hyper Masenko as one of his Super Attacks, while Super Saiyan 3 Gohan (Adult) can utilize Ultimate Masenko as his Super Attack. Trunks (Future) can use a variation called Maximum Masenko in his Prison Planet Prisoner uniform.

In Kakarot, it is one of Gohan's default Super Attacks learning it along with Ki Control and Flight from Piccolo after completing his survival training. It can be leveled up two times (Lv. 1 to Lv. 3). Additionally Super Masenko appears as an upgraded form of Masenko that has enhanced damage. Gohan can also learn new upgraded variants called Guided Masenko and Limit Breaker Masenko. Additionally, the Z Encyclopedia entry for Masenko, confirms that the technique was passed down from Piccolo to Gohan, thus confirming it is a technique of the Demon Clan Style. As part of the -Trunks- The Warrior of Hope DLC, the Masenko and Super Masenko appear as Super Attacks for both Future Gohan and Future Trunks (Teen & Adult). Future Gohan can also learn Limit Breaker Masenko via completing its training exercise at Training Grounds upon reaching The Warrior of Hope Episode 3: "In Pursuit of Power".
